Best Bank Bonuses — September 2026
By Nathaniel Booth · Published September 21, 2026
These are the seven bank bonuses I'm prioritizing for September 2026, in the order I'd actually open them. This is a direct-deposit month: five of the seven pay on payroll, and three of the big-bank offers are on a clock (Wells Fargo ends October 6, Chase October 14, U.S. Bank November 10). There's one business account for the sole proprietors and one idle-cash pick that pays 4% while it sits. Start with SoFi, it's the fastest payout on the list. Every offer here was re-checked on the bank's own page the day this went up.
The move this month
This month's move: split one paycheck four ways
Everything in the top five pays on direct deposit, and the totals are smaller than they look. Wells Fargo and Chase each want $1,000 across 90 days, Capital One wants two deposits of $500, and SoFi wants $5,000 inside a 25-day window. Most payroll systems let you split a paycheck across several accounts by dollar amount. Send $500 a pay period to Wells Fargo, Chase and Capital One each, and the rest to SoFi until its window clears, then move the split to U.S. Bank. If your employer only allows one account, route the whole paycheck to SoFi first and use the direct-deposit guide to see which of the other banks members have reported counting a push transfer from Fidelity, Ally or Current. Real payroll is always the safe route.

Checking bonus
SoFi $50–$400 Checking Account Bonus (2026) - Review & Requirements
Why I picked it
Fastest money on the list. $5,000 of direct deposits inside a 25-day window pays $400, and it posts within about 7 business days of the window closing, with no hold and no monthly fee. Below $5,000 it drops to $50, so don't start the clock until you know a full paycheck cycle lands inside 25 days. One direct-deposit bonus per Social Security number, for life. This is the same account from my 'dump your bank for SoFi' write-up, so if you're already doing that stack, this is bonus number one of it. Members report a push from Current counting as a direct deposit here (30 successes against 9 misses), but real payroll is the safe route.

Checking bonus
Wells Fargo $500 Checking Account Bonus (2026) - Review & Requirements
Why I picked it
Wells Fargo quietly opened a $500 door next to its usual $400 one: same Everyday Checking account, same $1,000 in direct deposits within 90 days, and the offer code attaches automatically when you apply from the offer page. The $1,000 is a total across the window, so two $500 paychecks do it. The $15 monthly fee waives with $500 a month in electronic deposits, which your direct deposit covers. The bonus lands within 30 days of qualifying, but plan on keeping the account open 120 days. There's a 12-month lookback: skip it if you took any Wells Fargo consumer checking bonus in the last year. Ends October 6.
#3
Checking bonus
Chase $400 Checking Account Bonus (2026) - Review & Requirements
Why I picked it
$1,000 in direct deposits within 90 days of enrolling, and the $400 posts within 15 days. Chase runs Early Warning, not ChexSystems, so it's one of the safer big-bank applications, and Hawaii residents can get it. Payroll, pension and government benefits count; Zelle, checks and wires don't. One Chase checking bonus every two years, so this is a choice between the $400 coupon and the $900 checking-plus-savings combo, not both, and the combo only makes sense if you've got $15,000 to park for 90 days. Expires October 14.

Checking bonus
U.S. Bank $250–$450 Checking Account Bonus (2026) - Review & Requirements
Why I picked it
Three rungs, all on two or more direct deposits within 90 days: $250 at $2,000, $350 at $5,000, $450 at $8,000. The $250 rung is the easy one. The $450 rung needs $8,000 of real payroll in 90 days, and U.S. Bank is stricter than most about what counts: P2P payments and plain electronic deposits are excluded. Also enroll in online banking within 90 days and fund $25 within 60 days. The first two statement periods are fee-free, then $1,500 in deposits or balance waives the $12. Outside U.S. Bank's footprint? Members get in by opening a U.S. Bank credit card or brokerage account first. Apply by November 10.

Checking bonus
Capital One $300 Checking Account Bonus (2026) - Review & Requirements
Why I picked it
Two direct deposits of $500 or more within 75 days with code OFFER300. No monthly fee, no minimum, and Capital One uses Early Warning rather than ChexSystems. The catch is the lookback: any 360 Checking, Simply Checking or Total Control Checking on or after January 1, 2024 disqualifies you, and that includes being a secondary owner. No end date is posted, but the payout is slow: expect it within 60 days of your second deposit.
#6
Business checking bonus
Wells Fargo $400–$825 Business Checking Bonus (2026) - Review & Requirements
Why I picked it
No direct deposit required, and sole proprietors qualify, no LLC needed. Deposit $2,500 by day 30 and hold it through day 60 for $400; $10,000 pays $550 and $25,000 pays $825, and your balance on day 30 sets the tier. The relaunch added 5 posted transactions inside the 60 days: debit purchases, bill pay and ACH deposits count, Zelle and internal transfers don't. A $2,000 balance waives the $15 fee, and the bonus already has you above that. Business is not eligible if it has a Wells Fargo business checking account now or closed one in the last 90 days. Ends November 10.
#7
Savings bonus
Live Oak Bank $300 Savings Bonus (9.5% Effective APY) - 2026 Review
Why I picked it
The idle-cash pick. $20,000 in a Live Oak personal savings account held for 90 days pays $300 on top of 4.00% APY, which works out to close to 10% annualized on the money while it sits. No monthly fee, no minimum to open. Open and fund by October 16. New and existing customers both qualify, one bonus per tax ID; existing customers have to keep their other Live Oak savings balances at or above where they were.
Honorable mentions
Worth a look, but they didn’t make the ranked list this month.
$1,200
U.S. Bank
Last call. The $1,200 for $25,000 held every day for 60 days (or $400 for $5,000 on the no-fee Business Essentials account) closes to new applicants September 27. If you have an LLC and the cash, this is a this-week decision.
$500
Bank of America Advantage Banking
Ends September 30. $100, $300 or $500 at $2,000, $5,000 or $10,000 in direct deposits within 90 days on Advantage Plus (not SafeBalance). An ACH push from Ally or Fidelity has a long track record of counting here.
$10,000
E*TRADE
Still running through October 31: $300 for $20,000 held a year, on a taxable brokerage account (code OFFER26) or an IRA (code RETIRE26). Ignore the $10,000 headline, it needs $5,000,000.
$550
Four Leaf Federal Credit Union
Still the best credit union offer nationwide, $350 for a single $500 direct deposit, but only if your ChexSystems file is clean. If you're opening the big-bank accounts above, do Four Leaf first or give it a month.
Got a business — or a side hustle?
Business checking pays the biggest bonuses in banking — no LLC required
As a sole proprietor you can stack $400–$900+ business bonuses — the equivalent of 20%+ APY on FDIC-insured cash.

Every month I look at every active checking and savings bonus in the catalog and shortlist the offers worth most people’s time. I weight three things: bonus value, how simple the direct-deposit requirement is, and how confident I am the offer is still around when you actually go to open the account. Picks that need a giant deposit, weird state restrictions, or look like they’re about to die get cut.
