Get Paid $1,300 to Dump Your Bank for SoFi

By Nathaniel Booth | Numbers verified September 1, 2026

Here is the whole thing in one paragraph. Your big bank pays you about a dollar a year on $10,000. SoFi pays 3.10% on savings, charges no fees, and right now will pay you $400 to move your direct deposit. A shopping portal pays a few hundred more for the same signup, Current pays $100 to be the account that makes the SoFi direct deposit possible if your payroll cannot, and Rakuten pays $100 to open SoFi Invest with $100. Done in the right order, the switch was worth $1,300 on September 1, 2026. The order matters, because two of these pieces cancel each other if you do them backwards.

This is the written version of the video. The live direct deposit data for SoFi, which changes more often than this page, lives on the SoFi bonus page. If you want the general rules for what counts as a direct deposit anywhere, start with the direct deposit guide.

The $1,300, Line by Line

Seven pieces. Four are fixed by the issuer, one is a shopping portal that varies by person, one is a free stock counted at its published average, and one is interest that scales with how much you park. Every line names where the number came from.

1. Swagbucks portal bonus$337
Click through Swagbucks first, open SoFi within 45 days, and make your very first deposit a qualifying direct deposit of $400 or more. Pays $12 on open and $325 after the deposit. Targeted: others see $250 to $415. Widely reported to pay alongside SoFi's own $400, though Swagbucks' terms carry a no-other-enrollment-bonus line; see the FAQ.Source: Swagbucks public tile, September 1, 2026
2. Swagbucks sign-up bonus$10
Only if you are new to Swagbucks. Join through a referral link, then make one purchase of $25 or more through Swagbucks Shop within 30 days and activate the bonus under Swag Ups. The SoFi offer does not count toward this; a normal store order does.Source: Swagbucks referral landing page, September 1, 2026
3. SoFi direct deposit bonus$400
$5,000 in eligible direct deposits inside the 25 days after your first one posts. $50 tier at $1,000 to $4,999.Source: sofi.com offer page, September 1, 2026
4. Current referral bonus$100
Eligible payroll deposits totaling $1,500 or more within 35 days of opening, through a referral link. The $1,500 shows inside the referral signup flow; Current's public terms page still reads $200.Source: Current referral terms, September 1, 2026
5. SoFi Invest through Rakuten$100
New Active Invest customer, click through Rakuten, fund $100 or more within 45 days.Source: Rakuten SoFi Invest store, September 1, 2026
6. SoFi free stock, published average$8
Fund the same Active Invest account with $50 and pick a claw prize. SoFi's published odds: $5 (85.5%), $10 (9.5%), $25 (3.3%), $100 (1.7%), $1,000 (0.028%). That averages about $8.Source: SoFi Claw promotion rules
7. Savings interest, year one on $10,000$345
3.10% APY with direct deposit, plus a 0.70% boost for the first six months as a new member. Rates are variable.Source: SoFi rate sheet dated 5/28/26
Total, year one, $10,000 parked$1,300

Not counted on purpose: SoFi Plus (paid, not required), the free stock beyond its published average, and any rate that has not been published. Bank bonuses are taxable interest; expect a 1099-INT.

Why SoFi Is Worth Switching To, Bonus or Not

The bonus gets you in the door. The account is why you stay. SoFi Checking & Savings is one login with two sides: a checking account for spending and a savings account that pays 3.10% APY when you have direct deposit set up, on a rate sheet dated May 28, 2026. New members who set up direct deposit get an extra 0.70% on the savings side for their first six months, which takes it to 3.80%. Without direct deposit the savings side pays 0.80%. Checking pays 0.50% either way.

Two honest gaps against the Fidelity Cash Management Account I covered before. SoFi does not reimburse out-of-network ATM fees. And cash deposits go through Green Dot locations at a store, with a fee of up to $4.95 each, because SoFi has no branches.

The Pro Tip: Live Out of Savings, Not Checking

The trap in this account is the same shape as the trap at Fidelity, just smaller. At Fidelity the default sweep earned 1.84% while SPAXX earned 3.3%. At SoFi, Checking earns 0.50% while Savings earns 3.10%. Money you forget in Checking is barely working.

So keep a week of spending in Checking and everything else in Savings. Point your direct deposit at Savings if you can. Transfers between the two sides are instant, and SoFi does not cap how many withdrawals you make from Savings each month, so there is no reason to hold a cushion on the low side. The 0.70% boost lives on one savings account, so keep the balance in one rather than spreading it around.

The Most Profitable Order, Step by Step

Two of these pieces cancel each other if you do them backwards: a portal click after you have opened the account pays nothing, and a regular transfer into SoFi before your direct deposit can void the Swagbucks bonus. Do it in this order.

1. Check the portals before you open anything

Log in to Swagbucks and Rakuten and look at the SoFi Checking & Savings offer on each. On September 1, 2026 Swagbucks showed $337 and Rakuten showed $125, but both are targeted and both move. Rakuten has run $250 to $400 earlier this year and Swagbucks has hit $505. Take whichever is bigger the day you do it. If you are not on Swagbucks yet, join through a referral link before you click the SoFi offer, then run one $25 purchase you were making anyway through their shop inside 30 days for $10 more.

The catch: A portal bonus cannot be combined with a SoFi referral link. The portal pays several times more than the $50 referral, so skip the referral link. You still get SoFi's own $400 either way.

2. Open Current first

Open a Current account through a referral link and route eligible payroll deposits totaling $1,500 or more to it inside 35 days. That is the only place in this whole plan where you have to touch your payroll, and for most people it is one paycheck. The $1,500 figure shows inside the referral signup flow rather than on Current's public terms page, which still reads $200. Current pays $100 for it. Keep the account: it is the key to the SoFi bonus if you cannot move $5,000 of payroll.

3. Open SoFi through the portal and leave it empty

Click the portal link, open SoFi Checking & Savings, and do not deposit anything. Swagbucks wants your very first deposit to be a qualifying direct deposit of $400 or more. A regular transfer in first can cost you the portal bonus.

4. Send $5,000 of direct deposits inside 25 days

This one deposit plan unlocks two bonuses at once: Swagbucks pays the rest of its bonus only after a qualifying direct deposit of $400 or more lands as your first deposit, and SoFi pays $400 once your direct deposits reach $5,000 inside 25 days. The clean path is real payroll: two biweekly paychecks of $2,500 inside the window does it, and you get paid up to two days early. If you cannot move that much payroll, push it from Current. Load Current with your own money (a normal transfer in is fine; it is the coding on the way out that matters), then send it to SoFi from the Current side with Payroll in the memo field. Community reports without the memo fail.

The catch: Check your transfer limit inside the Current app before planning one $5,000 push. If it is lower, split it into pushes of at least $1,000 each, all inside the 25 days. If nothing shows as a direct deposit within two weeks, move real payroll while the window is still open. This is a lifetime bonus; do not burn it on a maybe.

5. Move your savings in, on the savings side

SoFi Checking pays 0.50%. SoFi Savings pays 3.10% with direct deposit, and new members get an extra 0.70% for the first six months. Keep a week of spending in Checking and everything else in Savings. Transfers between the two are instant and there is no monthly withdrawal cap on the savings side. On $10,000 that is about $345 in year one.

6. Bonus round: open SoFi Invest through Rakuten

This one is separate from the bank account, so skip it and the rest still stands. Click the Rakuten SoFi Invest link, open an Active Invest account, and fund it with $100. Rakuten pays $100 within 45 days of the deposit posting. SoFi's own free-stock offer stacks on top once you have funded at least $50: 85 percent of people get $5, and SoFi's published odds average out to about $8. The advertised up-to-$1,000 hits 0.028 percent of the time, so count $8 and nothing more.

7. Wait, and keep everything open until it all posts

SoFi pays within 7 business days after the 25-day window closes. Swagbucks pends for 31 days. Rakuten pays within 45 days. Current pays after the payroll deposit lands. Realistic calendar: about eight weeks from opening Current to the last dollar posting.

What Counts as a Direct Deposit at SoFi in 2026

This is the part that changed, and it is why the Fidelity trick from the last video does not work here. SoFi rewrote its definition in 2026 to recurring payroll, pension, or government benefits, and its systems now filter most external pushes. Here is what people have actually reported, with dates.

WORKSReal payroll79 working, 2 failing on thebonusstack as of Aug 29, 2026. Always the safest.
WORKSCurrent ACH push (memo: Payroll)22 working, 3 failing as of Aug 29, 2026. Our own tracker: 30 working, 9 failing, last confirmed July 2026.
WORKSChase Business payroll ACH26 working, none failing as of Aug 21, 2026. Sole proprietors can run this legitimately as an owner's draw.
MIXEDAstra, Relay FinancialOlder reports of both working. Thin and aging; try early with payroll as backup.
FAILSFidelity Cash Management push0 for 6 in July 2026. The one big fintech the Fidelity trick does not crack.
FAILSSchwab, Wise, Kraken, Ally, personal ChaseAll have fresh 2026 failure reports. Wise died around March, Kraken recoded in June.

Reports come from thebonusstack's SoFi tracker and our own member data as of late August 2026. They are what happened to other people, not a promise from SoFi. The live table with every source is on the SoFi bonus page.

SoFi Plus: Paid Now, and Not Required

SoFi Plus used to come free with direct deposit. That ended March 30, 2026, and it is now a $10-per-month membership. SoFi's own FAQ says you do not need it for the $400 bonus, and none of the five pieces above depend on it.

What it buys: 4.50% APY on up to $20,000 in one savings account (3.10% above that), a 1% match on deposits into non-retirement SoFi Invest accounts, a doubled free-stock offer, and a 10% boost on SoFi credit card cash back. On $10,000 the extra interest is about $140 a year against $120 in fees, a wash. On $20,000 it is about $160 ahead. Below $10,000, skip it.

Four Honest Downsides

A Realistic Calendar

Day 0Join Swagbucks through the referral link if you are new there, then check both portals. Open Current through the referral link. Point $1,500 of payroll at it.
Day 0 to 1Click the portal, open SoFi Checking & Savings, deposit nothing.
Day 7 to 14First paycheck lands in Current. Push $5,000 to SoFi with Payroll in the memo, or route real payroll to SoFi. The 25-day clock starts when the first deposit posts.
Same weekMove savings into SoFi Savings. Then the bonus round: click Rakuten, open SoFi Invest, fund $100.
Day 25 to 40SoFi window closes; $400 posts within 7 business days. Current's $100 has posted.
Day 45 to 60Swagbucks award clears its 31-day pend. Rakuten pays the Invest bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is $1,300 real, or is it the best case?

It is the number on September 1, 2026 with a $10,000 savings balance. Four of the seven pieces are fixed by the issuer: SoFi's $400, Current's $100, Rakuten's $100 for SoFi Invest, and Swagbucks' $10 for a new member. The Swagbucks portal piece is targeted and was $337 that day; if yours shows $250 the total is $1,213, and if it shows $415 it is $1,378. The free stock is counted at SoFi's published average of about $8, so most people get $5 and a few get more. The interest piece scales with your balance. Nothing here assumes SoFi Plus or a rate that has not been published.

Does the Current push really count as a direct deposit at SoFi?

SoFi's terms say recurring payroll, pension, or government benefits, so on paper no. In practice the community keeps reporting Current pushes counting when the memo says Payroll: 22 working against 3 failing on thebonusstack as of Aug 29, 2026, and 30 against 9 in our own tracker. That is a well-documented workaround, not a promise. SoFi can change it without telling anyone, which is why you send it early and keep real payroll ready.

Why not use Fidelity like in the other video?

Because SoFi is the one place it stopped working. Fidelity Cash Management pushes were 0 for 6 at SoFi in July 2026. Fidelity is still the best sender at Bank of America, U.S. Bank, Capital One, and Citi; SoFi tightened its receiving side in 2026 and now only Current and Chase Business payroll pushes have fresh successes.

Should I pay for SoFi Plus?

Not for the bonus. SoFi's own FAQ says Plus is not required for the $400. Plus became a $10-per-month paid membership in March 2026. It buys 4.50% on up to $20,000 of savings instead of 3.10%, plus a 1% match on non-retirement Invest deposits and a doubled free-stock offer. On $10,000 the extra interest is about $140 against $120 in fees, so it is a wash. At $20,000 it is about $160 ahead. Below $10,000, skip it.

What is the catch with the Swagbucks bonus?

Four things. You have to click through Swagbucks before you open the account and open it within 45 days. Your very first deposit into SoFi has to be a qualifying direct deposit of $400 or more from payroll, an employer, or a benefits provider, so open the account empty. The award comes in two pieces, $12 on open and $325 after the deposit, and it pends for 31 days, so do not close anything early. And Swagbucks' terms say the reward cannot be combined with any other enrollment bonuses, including a referral reward. In practice the Swagbucks money and SoFi's own $400 are widely reported paying on the same account, since Swagbucks pays one and SoFi pays the other, but that line is why there is no SoFi referral link on this page and why you should read it as reported, not guaranteed.

Can I do this if I already have a SoFi account?

The $400 is for members who have never set up direct deposit with SoFi, so an old account with no DD history can still qualify for SoFi's bonus. The portal bonuses and the Rakuten Invest bonus are new-customer only, so an existing SoFi member loses those pieces. Existing members can still take the savings rate and the Current side of the plan.
