Eligibility
Membership: GECU, headquartered in El Paso, Texas, serving members across Texas and New Mexico including Las Cruces. You need a GECU share account, opened with a one time $10 deposit, before you can open checking. GECU's own membership page says all you need to become a member is a valid photo ID and $10 for the share account, and it names no residency requirement at all. OUT OF STATE: this is reported open out-of-state, not bank-confirmed. GECU neither promises nor refuses out-of-state membership in writing, so treat an application from outside Texas or New Mexico as worth trying rather than as guaranteed. Both new and existing GECU members qualify as long as the checking account itself is new. Business checking and second chance checking are excluded. Qualifying direct deposits are electronic deposits of a paycheck, pension or government benefits such as Social Security; transfers between GECU accounts, transfers from other financial institutions, mobile deposits, person to person transfers such as Zelle, and branch or ATM deposits do not count. The average daily balance is the sum of each day's ending balance across the 90 days divided by 90. One bonus per member per checking account. The account must be opened by July 31, 2026 and stay open until the bonus is paid, which happens within one business day after the 90 day qualification period ends.
