Bank Bonus Cooldown Periods: How Long Until You Can Reopen (2026 Matrix)
By Nathaniel Booth | Updated August 8, 2026
The most expensive mistake in bank bonuses is not a missed direct deposit. It is opening an account you are not eligible to be paid on. Every bonus you have ever earned has a clock attached: some reset in 12 months, some in 24, some in 36, and a growing share use "once per lifetime" language that bars you forever. This page is the reference for every cooldown I track, a live matrix of 260 active bonus records generated straight from the same catalog that powers the rest of Fat Stacks Academy.
Because the table is built from the catalog at render time, it cannot drift the way a hand-typed list does. If a cooldown changes in the catalog, the matrix changes with it. You can browse every institution we track in the A-Z bank directory.
How Bonus Cooldowns Actually Work
A bonus cooldown is the minimum time that must pass between claims. It is written into the product disclosure in one of five ways, and the exact phrasing matters because it determines when the timer starts, how it is tracked, and whether you can ever re-earn the bonus at all.
1. "Once per X months since your last bonus on this product." The most common and most repeat-friendly form. Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citi, and most large banks use this language. The clock usually starts on a date tied to your prior claim. Which date varies: Chase measures from your last coupon enrollment, while many banks measure from the day the prior bonus posted. When you are unsure, track the posted date. It is always the later of the two, so waiting from it can never make you re-apply too early.
2. "Once per X months per tax ID." Same idea, but the restriction attaches to your SSN rather than a specific product. This matters when a bank has several checking variants, because all of them share one timer. Capital One groups its 360 consumer checking products under a single 36-month window.
3. Lifetime language ("new customer only" / "never had X"). The bank is saying that if you have ever had this product, you cannot earn this bonus. There is no waiting it out. You get one shot per SSN, ever. SoFi is the best-known example, and the full list, generated from the catalog, is in the danger list below.
4. No restriction documented. Rare but valuable: the disclosure simply does not limit prior recipients. When a record in the matrix shows no stated cooldown, that is a statement about the disclosure, not a promise the bank will pay you twice. Absence of a documented cooldown is not proof you can re-earn the bonus, and it is not permission to count on it either. That is exactly why we apply the 12-month floor described below.
5. Holding period as a de-facto cooldown. Many offers have no published cooldown but require you to keep the account open for a set period after the bonus posts. Close early and you forfeit the bonus, or worse, the bank claws it back. A 12-month hold is functionally a 12-month cooldown: your SSN cannot go back against this product family until the hold expires.
Our recommendation: treat 12 months as the default minimum. Even when a bank's fine print is silent on cooldowns, churning the same institution every few months invites shutdown risk, weakens future approvals, and burns a relationship that may have higher-tier offers later. The matrix below shows the largest of three numbers: the bank's stated cooldown, any required holding period, and a 12-month relationship floor. If another bank is running an offer in the same window, take the new bank first and let the one you already churned rest longer.
Cooldown vs. Shutdown: Know the Difference
Every bonus hunter confuses these two concepts early on. They are not the same risk.
A cooldown is a published eligibility rule. You open the account, follow the steps, and the bank simply does not credit the bonus because you are still inside the waiting window. There is no penalty. You can close the account normally. Nothing appears on ChexSystems, the banking-history bureau, or Early Warning Services, its counterpart. You just wasted some time.
A shutdown is the bank deciding you are abusing its products and closing every account you hold. It can be reported to ChexSystems or EWS, and future banks that see the flag may deny your applications for up to five years. Community reports (Doctor of Credit is the best archive) tie shutdowns to a few patterns: rapid open-and-close cycles on the same product, identical direct-deposit amounts hitting many banks in the same week, funding deposits the bank later reverses, and opening a burst of accounts at one institution in a short window.
The Master Cooldown Matrix
Sorted by recommended cooldown, ascending: the 12-month repeatable tier at the top, lifetime-only at the bottom. Each bank name links to its entry in the bank directory, and rows with a Review link go to the full offer breakdown. All 260 records below are active; expired offers are excluded automatically.

Table legend. Cooldown color coding: green means 12 months or less (or none documented); amber means 13 to 24 months; red means lifetime-only or 25+ months. The Notes column is truncated at 110 characters; click Review for the full cooldown language.
The Repeatable Tier: Annual-Eligible Bonuses
These are the bonuses where neither a stated cooldown nor a long holding period exceeds our 12-month relationship floor. In plain terms: each one can be re-earned roughly every 12 months, which makes this tier the backbone of any sustainable rotation. If you can afford to wait longer at a bank you have already churned so that a fresh bank goes first, do that. The strategy section below explains why.
The Danger List: Lifetime-Language Bonuses
Each of these bonuses can be earned once per SSN, ever. If you are going to claim one, time it for the maximum tier and read the disclosure first, because there is no second chance. They are listed in descending order of bonus amount so you can prioritize the biggest checks.
Churning Strategy: The 24-Month Standard
If you only remember one number from this page, make it 24 months. It is the modal cooldown for major-bank checking bonuses. Chase personal is 24. Chase Business is 24. PNC is 24. KeyPoint is 24. Associated Bank is 24. Meanwhile Huntington, Wells Fargo consumer checking, Bank of America, BMO, and Citi all run 12-month windows, so do not assume everyone lines up at 24. Check the matrix bank by bank. If you build your pipeline on a 24-month rotation, you will rarely hit a cooldown wall anywhere.
The practical system is simple: keep one row per bonus claimed, tracking one date, which is the date the bonus posted to the account. Not the open date. Not the close date. The posted date. A few banks (Chase) technically run the clock from an earlier event, your coupon enrollment, but the posted date is always the later of the two, so waiting from it is the conservative default that can never make you apply too soon.
Right now the annual-eligible tier in the matrix totals $50,425 in claimable bonuses. That figure is computed from the live records above, not typed by hand, and nobody clears all of it. A disciplined hunter running roughly one new account per month clears five to seven bonuses a year from this tier alone, without ever touching a 24-month or lifetime offer.
Rotate, do not pile on. The single biggest mistake new churners make is opening five accounts in the same week to chase every current offer at once. Banks see that velocity and flag it. Spread new applications across eight to twelve weeks, let the direct-deposit routing settle at each bank, then move to the next. Every experienced churner I know runs about one new account per month and never more than two.
Fund from a neutral hub. Use one account, typically a Capital One 360 or an Ally, as your rotation hub. All direct deposits land at the hub first and get pushed to whichever bonus account you are currently clearing. Your employer's payroll system never sees a different bank every eight weeks, which itself looks suspicious, and you always know exactly which account is receiving the qualifying deposits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do banks actually enforce bonus cooldowns?
Banks track bonuses internally by Social Security Number (your tax ID) and, in some cases, by household address. When you re-apply before the cooldown window expires, the bank's system flags your SSN as having received a prior bonus and simply refuses to credit the new one. The account will usually still open. You just do not get paid. The exact clock-start varies by bank: Chase, for example, measures two years from your last coupon enrollment, which is the date you signed up for the prior offer, not the date the money arrived.
Does closing the account early reset the cooldown timer?
No. The cooldown is measured from the date tied to your last bonus (enrollment date or posted date, depending on the bank), not from the day you start the new application. Closing an account in January does not let you re-earn the bonus in February. Banks are explicit about this in the fine print. The product disclosure typically says 'must not have received this bonus in the past X months,' where X is the cooldown.
How often can I reopen a Chase checking account for the bonus?
Chase's personal checking bonuses carry a 24-month cooldown. You cannot have received a Chase checking bonus within the past two years, and Chase measures the two years from your last coupon enrollment. Chase also excludes you if you are an existing Chase checking customer, closed a Chase checking account within the last 90 days, or closed one with a negative balance within the last three years. Chase Business Checking runs its own 24-month window, tracked separately from personal.
What is SoFi's cooldown? I heard it is once per lifetime.
Correct. SoFi's direct-deposit bonus uses lifetime language, which means one direct-deposit bonus per SSN, ever. Once you have claimed it, you cannot re-earn it by closing and reopening. That makes SoFi a one-shot bonus: time it for the maximum tier rather than rushing it at a lower amount.
Is Wells Fargo's cooldown 12 or 24 months?
Wells Fargo's consumer checking bonus is 12 months on Everyday Checking. The key language is 'must not have received a Wells Fargo consumer checking bonus in the past 12 months.' That makes Wells Fargo one of the most repeat-friendly major banks: you can realistically claim their consumer bonus once per year. Their business checking bonus runs a separate, longer 24-month window.
Can I use a different name, address, or account type to bypass a cooldown?
No, and attempting it is a bad idea. Banks key everything off your SSN, so a different address will not help. Using a spouse's SSN to claim a bonus they did not actually earn is bank fraud. The safer move is to rotate across the many banks with active bonuses at any given moment. By the time you cycle through them, the first bank's cooldown has usually expired.
What counts as the 'same product family' for cooldown purposes?
Most banks group their consumer checking products under one cooldown. At Chase, the personal checking products all share one 24-month timer. Capital One treats its 360 consumer checking variants as one family under a single 36-month window. Business checking is usually a separate, parallel cooldown, which is why you can often claim a personal and a business bonus at the same bank concurrently.
What is the difference between a cooldown and a shutdown?
A cooldown is a specific, published restriction on re-earning a bonus: you open the account, but the bonus does not post. A shutdown is the bank closing all your accounts and reporting you to ChexSystems or Early Warning Services for abusive behavior. Cooldowns are planned. Shutdowns are catastrophic because they can lock you out of the banking system for five years. See the callout in this guide for the behaviors most likely to trigger one.
Do brokerage bonuses (E*TRADE, Schwab, Merrill) have cooldowns?
Most brokerage cash bonuses do not publish explicit cooldowns, but the firms track prior bonus recipients by SSN. The typical language is 'new funds only,' meaning transfers from an account you already hold at the same firm do not qualify. Community reports suggest many can be re-earned roughly every 12 months by moving assets out and back in, but that is crowdsourced evidence, not a published rule, and the firms watch for the pattern.
Can I earn multiple bonuses from the same bank at the same time?
Yes, if they are on different product types. The most common stack is one checking bonus plus one savings bonus plus one business checking bonus, all at the same bank, all concurrent. Each has its own cooldown clock. Chase, Citi, and Wells Fargo all allow this kind of stacking, and it is one of the fastest ways to raise your bonus earnings without any churning flags.
Stacks OS keeps a live ledger of every bonus you have claimed, the exact date it posted, and when the cooldown on each bank expires. No more spreadsheets. Your next eligible bonus surfaces automatically.

Cooldown periods, fees, and credit-pull behavior are set per offer and change over time — every value here reflects commonly-seen terms verified as of June 2026 and should be confirmed against the current offer's fine print before you apply. 'Rolling' means the clock starts from a date specific to you (last bonus, last enrollment, or last account closure, depending on the bank). 'Fixed-date (advancing)' describes the approach used by Capital One, Truist, and Regions, where eligibility hinges on whether you held or closed an account on or after a set calendar date the bank periodically moves forward — functionally a multi-year wait, but not a clean rolling window.
Credit-pull and ChexSystems caveat
Nearly all the big banks open personal checking with a soft credit pull combined with a ChexSystems or Early Warning Services (EWS) deposit-history review, so opening alone typically doesn't ding your FICO score. A hard pull usually appears only when you add overdraft protection or a linked line of credit — Citizens, for instance, stays a soft pull only if you opt out of overdraft protection. Chime uses neither ChexSystems nor a hard pull. Pull behavior can vary by state, channel (branch vs online), and product, so treat the column as a strong default rather than a guarantee, and check current data-point threads before applying.
Early-closure fees vs bonus clawbacks
Two different penalties are easy to confuse. A bonus clawback means the bank reverses the cash bonus if you close too soon (Chase, TD, BMO, and Huntington commonly enforce a ~6-month window; Truist forfeits if you close before payout). A flat early-account-closure fee is charged regardless of the bonus (PNC/Regions/KeyBank ~$25 within 180 days, though PNC's is frequently waived in practice; BMO ~$50 within 90 days). Some banks have neither. Best practice across the churning community is to keep an account open ~6 months after the bonus posts to avoid clawbacks and reduce blacklisting risk, even where no fee is listed.
Bank bonus cooldown matrix (checking)
| Bank | Cooldown period | Window type | Credit-pull type | Early closure fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chase | 24 months from last bonus enrollment date (per product category) | Rolling (per product category) | Soft pull + ChexSystems | Bonus clawed back if closed within 6 months; no separate fee |
| Wells Fargo | 12 months from last consumer checking bonus | Rolling (bonus-to-bonus) | Soft pull + ChexSystems | No early closure fee reported |
| Citi | 365 days since owning a prior Citi checking account (raised from 180 days in Jan 2024) | Rolling | Soft pull | No fee; bonus posts ~120 days out (90-day qualification + ~30-day payout) |
| US Bank | 12 months: no US Bank consumer checking owned/held in last 12 mo AND no consumer checking bonus in last 12 mo | Rolling | Soft pull | No early closure fee reported |
| Bank of America | 12 months: not owned/co-owned a BofA personal checking account in last 12 mo | Rolling (ownership-based) | Soft pull | No early closure fee reported |

Savings-account bonus: separate cooldown vs checking?
| Bank | Savings bonus separate from checking? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chase | Yes — separate 24-month timer | Limit is per product category: one checking AND one savings bonus per 2 years, tracked independently |
| Wells Fargo | Yes — separate 12-month track | A checking bonus does NOT block a savings bonus; the 12-month exclusion is savings-bonus-to-savings-bonus only |
| Citi | Yes — combined offers let you open both | Citi runs combined personal checking/savings offers (up to ~$1,500-$2,000); each leg tied to its own product eligibility |
| BMO | Combined offer; one checking + one savings bonus | Checking and savings bonuses are offered together in the same promo; one of each |

More Questions, Answered
Is the cooldown measured from when I got the bonus or when I opened/closed the account?
It varies by bank. Chase measures its 24 months from your last bonus enrollment date. Wells Fargo and US Bank measure roughly 12 months from your last bonus (US Bank also requires no account in the last 12 months). Bank of America measures 12 months from when you last owned a checking account. Citizens (6 months), TD, and Fifth Third (13 months) measure from when you closed your prior account, while Capital One, Truist, and Regions instead make you ineligible if you held an account on or after a fixed calendar date. Always confirm the exact trigger in the current offer's terms.
What's the difference between a rolling window and a fixed-date cutoff?
A rolling window (e.g. Chase's 24 months, Wells Fargo's and US Bank's 12 months) counts forward from a date unique to you. A fixed-date rule — used by Capital One, Truist, and Regions — makes you ineligible if you held or closed an account on or after a set calendar date that the bank periodically advances. It functions like a multi-year wait but is not a clean rolling window. Clean once-per-calendar-year resets are rare among the big banks.
Do banks do a hard credit pull when I open a checking account?
For most major banks the account-opening decision is a soft pull plus a ChexSystems or Early Warning Services (EWS) deposit-history check, which does not affect your credit score. A hard pull is more likely only if you opt into overdraft protection or a linked line of credit — Citizens, for example, is a soft pull only if you decline overdraft protection. Chime uses neither ChexSystems nor a hard pull. Confirm before applying if you're rate-sensitive.
Will I lose the bonus if I close the account early?
Often yes. Chase, TD Bank, BMO, and Huntington can claw back the bonus if you close within roughly 6 months, and Truist forfeits it if the account is closed before payout. Some banks also charge a flat early-closure fee: PNC, Regions, and KeyBank list $25 if closed within 180 days (PNC's is often not actually charged), and BMO lists $50 within 90 days. Several banks (Wells Fargo, US Bank, Bank of America, Capital One, Citizens, SoFi) have no commonly-reported early-closure fee. These details change by offer — confirm current terms.
Do savings-account bonuses have their own cooldown separate from checking?
At several major banks, yes — checking and savings are treated as separate product categories with independent eligibility, so a recent checking bonus generally won't block a savings bonus. Chase is the clearest example: one checking and one savings bonus per 24 months, each on its own timer. Wells Fargo's 12-month exclusion likewise applies savings-bonus-to-savings-bonus, not checking-to-savings. Citi and BMO commonly bundle a checking + savings offer together. Verify per offer.
